Measure what must pass through
List mowers, bins, carts and other equipment, including attachments. The needed space includes room to steer, not just the equipment’s widest dimension. A corner immediately inside the gate can change what fits.
Distinguish nominal and clear width
Posts, hinges, stops and latch components affect the usable opening. Ask the proposal to identify the clear passage with the gate open. For double gates, consider how each leaf is secured and how often both must be opened.
Check the swing on the actual grade
A rising lawn or driveway can interfere with a gate partway through its movement. Confirm swing direction, clearance and hold-open arrangements. Wider or heavier gates may need a different support design.
Plan for future access
Consider occasional deliveries and maintenance before finalizing a narrow opening. Any removable section or larger access gate should be specifically designed and quoted. Automated access is a separate specialized scope, not an assumed upgrade to a manual gate.
