Understand the grade changes
A steady slope and an abrupt drop need different transitions. Approximate photographs help explain the yard, but final layout requires actual site conditions. Retaining walls and drainage routes add constraints that should be identified early.
Compare the two approaches
Stepped panels stay level between posts and create a stair-step top line. A compatible racking system follows the grade within its design limits. Custom wood layouts offer other options. Ask to see the proposed transition rather than assuming one method fits every material.
Review openings at ground level
Bottom gaps can matter for pets, privacy and maintenance. Avoid filling drainage paths just to close a visual gap. The fence design and any grading work should be considered separately and coordinated where necessary.
Treat gates as a separate detail
Gate swing across rising ground can bind even if the adjacent fence fits well. Confirm the whole opening arc and latch position. A sloped yard may change the best gate location, not just the shape of the panel beside it.
