Choose the privacy level
Side-by-side pickets, overlapping boards and alternating-board layouts create different sight lines. Ask to see how the proposed pattern looks straight on and at an angle. Wood changes as it weathers, so a layout that looks closed at installation should not be assumed to remain gap-free.
Specify the structure as well as the style
The written scope should describe wood species or treatment, post material, rails, fasteners and gate construction. A photograph alone does not define these details. Match the design to the height, exposure and intended use rather than comparing only a per-foot figure.
Plan for maintenance and access
Discuss a finish compatible with the selected lumber and follow its preparation and application instructions. Vegetation and soil against wood can complicate inspection and care. Allow access to gates and the fence line so hardware and damaged boards remain serviceable.
Price the whole fence
Corners, slopes, gates, old-fence removal and access can materially affect the estimate. Decide which side faces each area and check neighborhood requirements before materials are ordered. Bring approximate dimensions and your preferred appearance; final quantities require a site review.
