Identify the patio, windows or activity areas you want to screen. A fence at a lower boundary may not block a view from an elevated property. Assess the relationship of ground levels and nearby structures before choosing height.
Compare board patterns
Side-by-side, overlapping and alternating layouts create different degrees of screening. Ask how the proposed pattern looks from an angle and how weathering can change gaps. Match the style to maintenance expectations as well as appearance.
Design the transitions
Privacy often changes at gate openings, corners and stepped panels. Review these points on the plan. Keep access to utilities, drainage paths and maintenance areas rather than closing every opening without considering its purpose.
Confirm restrictions early
Property boundaries, neighborhood approvals and local placement or height rules may constrain the design. Bring available documents to the project discussion. A useful layout solves the privacy problem within those constraints rather than relying on a taller fence alone.
