The City of Huntsville inspections FAQ states that fences do not require a permit, while fences in the Huntsville Historic District need preservation-commission approval. This does not settle boundary, easement or neighborhood restrictions. Confirm current guidance for the actual parcel, especially outside City jurisdiction.
Separate the different approvals
A building-permit question, zoning review, historic approval and neighborhood approval are not interchangeable. A fence in a historic district can require additional review. Record who obtains each required approval and when it must be completed.
Prepare the project information
Have a property survey or available boundary information, the proposed line, material, height and gate locations ready. Identify easements and corners. This information helps the authority and installer evaluate the actual proposal rather than an abstract fence idea.
Put responsibilities in writing
