Identify the proposed system
Ask what post material, dimensions and installation method are included. Height, gate loads, exposure, ground conditions and manufacturer requirements affect the design. A generic depth or spacing recommendation is not a substitute for site-specific planning.
Look carefully at gate supports
Wide or heavy gates put different demands on supports than a typical fence run. Ask whether gate posts and their installation differ from line posts. The goal is reliable movement and alignment, not merely matching the appearance.
Clarify excavation assumptions
Rock, buried obstructions and existing footings can change the work. Establish utility-location responsibilities and ask how unforeseen conditions will be documented and priced. Private buried lines may require separate locating arrangements.
Define what remains after replacement
If old footings are left or existing posts reused, record that clearly. Reused components need to suit the new system. Confirm hole treatment, surplus soil handling and surface restoration so the final site condition is understood.
